 もともとの意味は「権限や手段を与える」(Oxford English Dictionary)。
〔……〕辞書には次の表に示すようにコンピュータ用の定義も併せて示されていることが多いが、英和辞書の半数で「割り込み」(interrupt)に特化した用法になっている理由は不明。


・著者の疑問に対して、「辞書は良きにつけ悪しきにつけ、先行する辞書の語釈(英和なら、該当する単語の羅列)を踏襲する風習が残っているから」と答えるのは乱暴かもしれない。いくら、かつて日本の歴々の国語辞書で誤った語釈が人力コピペされつづけていたという事案もあったとはいえ。
